New and poorly described bryozoans from the Catalano-Balearic area (NW Mediterranean)
Abstract
Over the last ten years, we compiled a collection of bryozoans from the Catalano-Balearic Sea (NW Mediterranean), resulting in the description of nine new species or subspecies: Cribrilaria pseudoradiata balearica subsp. nov., Cribrilaria setiformis alata subsp. nov., Glabrilaria corbula cyranosa subsp. nov., Schizomavella (Schizomavella) harmelini sp. nov., Palmiskenea diazi sp. nov., Cellepora ballesterosi sp. nov., Cellepora gilii sp. nov., Cellepora sp., Rhynchozoon garraboui sp. nov., Rhynchozoon trifolium sp. nov. We also completed the description of two poorly described species, viz., Rhynchozoon quadrispinatum Zabala & Maluquer, 1988 and Rhynchozoon pseudodigitatum Zabala & Maluquer, 1988; and amended the description of Mollia circumcincta (Heller, 1867) and Rhynchozoon neapolitanum Gautier, 1962 to add features that were not included in the original descriptions. This study confirms that even in an area where the fauna is well known, our knowledge remains incomplete, and emphasizes the need for reassessment of regional or local fauna.
